an-a-c | An Architecture Collaboration

Xin Li, Nao Uchida, Robert Schiemann, Jan-Holger Stucken

We are an architecture studio based in Basel and Tokyo. Working internationally and from diverse backgrounds, we aim to foster an understanding for the essential. Our process is driven by a shared curiosity for themes of contemporary relevance, leading us to create thoughtful, future-oriented solutions.

Our work focuses on the intersection of cautious use of material, urban sustainability, and context-driven design. We explore these themes through sensitive conversions of existing structures, studies for efficient urban densification and a deep engagement with natural building materials, as demonstrated by our 2nd Prize-winning design for a rehabilitation clinic in wood and rammed earth. This approach is applied to projects ranging from health care facilities, like the recent renovation of a childcare clinic, to private homes such as our house in Karuizawa.

Beyond client projects we like to engange with the broader architectural discourse. In 2024, we curated a joint installation at Swissbau on the tangible experience of sustainable building materials. We also contributed as guest critics for studio reviews at institutions like the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago and ETH Zurich and teach at the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH).

We are always open for an exchange. Our studio is particularly drawn to commissions that present unique contextual or programmatic challenges, inviting collaborations that aim for a sensitive architectural response.
